Higher Ground is hands down our favourite coffee shop in the city to lounge around. The atmosphere is relaxed, cozy and welcoming. It's in a little house in bustling Kensington, close to the fun yet away from the noise. There's a fireplace, a sky light, local art, plenty of people and plenty of seats.
Higher Ground has a large variety of tea and coffee, as well as soup, sandwiches and other comfort food. For people like us with no willpower, there's a great selection of treats, cakes, cookies and pies. They also serve beer and wine.
V got the Chai: a warm drink with black tea, milk and spices. It was cozy and comforting, like a hot glass of milk. The tea and spices could have been a bit stronger. To get more flavour, V got the Market Spice tea next. It's a black tea packed with cinnamon and cloves, that is sure to warm you up. Market Spice tea can be found at a few other coffee shops in the city as well (we're googling it now, and can't tell exactly who makes it. If you know, leave us a comment!).
P got the Butter Beer. Yes, the same one from Harry Potter! Higher Ground started serving Butter Beer when Kensington morphed into Diagon Alley in 2015. It has comforting flavours of brown sugar, caramel and cinnamon. It was like a hug in a mug!
We also got the coconut cake. The icing and cream layers were the stars of the cake! The slice was a very generous size as well. It was just the thing to snack on while sipping on delicious drinks.
V's Final Word: Come to Higher Ground for the atmosphere! It's the perfect place for a cup of tea and a good book.
P's Final Word: I sometimes feel like I need to get out of the house in order to get some work done. Higher Ground is ideal. It's relaxed, unpretentious, and the staff are always friendly!
Price Range: Around $20 for three drinks and a slice of cake
